About Our Process

We invite you to journey with us.

After Bishop Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr., announced his intention to retire, the Standing Committee of the diocese appointed two committees: the Search and Nomination Committee and the Transitions CommitteeThe Standing Committee also created this collect for use throughout the transition process.

O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come: You have journeyed with your people Israel and we pray you, journey with us now, in this time of episcopal transition and change. Walk beside us on the road that is ahead, calm our fears, awaken our hope, and open our hearts, as together we seek your guidance. Inspire us, and those appointed to search for candidates, to discern your will for the Diocese of Michigan. May we put our whole trust in you as we look to Christ, the great shepherd of our souls; who together with the Holy Spirit is alive and reigns now and forever. Amen.

The Search and Nomination Committee (SNC) began its process in the spring of 2018 by inviting the people of the diocese into conversation through listening sessions: five general sessions, two clergy-only sessions, and one virtual listening session. We asked participants to gather in small groups to address questions about joys and blessings they’ve experienced as members of the Diocese of Michigan, and about the challenges and opportunities facing us as a diocese. You can read more about what we learned in these sessions in our summary of the listening sessions.

The information we compiled from the listening sessions informed the survey we created and distributed in the summer of 2018, which asked respondents to rank their responses to a variety of questions about the work of the Episcopal Church in our diocese, as well as characteristics they hope for in our next bishop. To read more, please visit the survey results page.

Using this data, as well as information gathered from other sources, we created our profile to introduce you to the people and programs of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan (EDOMI).

We invite you to view this profile and join with us in prayerful discernment as to whether you are called to take the next step on the road with us.
